ChemiCloud
ChemiCloud is a newer hosting company that is really rocking the game. They get an Excellent TrustPilot score with a 4.9 out of 5! What we also love is that they are really active replying to TrustPilot reviews and really trying to help the customers.
- Unlimited Bandwith
- Limited Disk Space
- $3,95 per month
- Free Migrations
- Free Daily Backups
- Free Domain
- Free CDN
- 45 days Money Back
Amazing company with great offers. You can only host 1 domain with their smallest account, after that the accounts are limited by disk space. The only thing we didnt liked that much about ChemiCloud is that you can only order per 2 or 3 years. So not monthly or yearly. But again that is the only downside with this company.
HostWinds
Hostwinds is another one of favourites. The website looks nice and simple or maybe a bit older then our other picks. But their service is excellent. Their TrustPilot score is Great the only thing concerning is that TrustPilot have detected fake reviews for HostWinds. TrustPilot didn’t mentioned if they came from HostWinds or possible angry customers. Nevertheless it is a bit concerning.
- Unlimited Bandwidth
- Unlimited Disk Space
- $3,29 per month
- Free Website Transfers
- Free Dedicated IP
- Several Rewards
The offer three different shared hosting accounts, all come with unlimited disk space and bandwidth the only difference between the accounts is the amount of domains you can host with it. Their cheapest package is the Basic one and starts at $3.29 a month. In 2018 they have won several awards for their services, so this is a safe bet for an excellent host.
Hostinger
Hostinger was founded in Lithuania and has several datacenters around the globe. Next to shared hosting they provide a whole range of services even including hosting your minecraft server. Right now there is a sale that you pay only $0.99 per month! You cant find much cheaper then that. I must say the 99 cent price is only if you prepay for 48 months, so that sets you back $47,52 to start.
- $0.99 per month
- Limited Monthly Visitors
- GIT Access
- WordPress Acceleration
- 30 day money-back guarantee
They also deliver an amazing service, with great uptime and support. They have an Excellent Trustpilot score and the reviews are raving. Really the only downside with them in our opinion is that you only get the great price if you prepay for 48 months.
HostGator
HostGator was founded in 2002 in Florida. It currently serves over 2 million websites and is one of the biggest shared hosting providers on the internet. They offer 3 price plans and the cheapest (one domain) starts at $2.75 paid per 36 months. So that means you have to pay 3 years upfront ($156,33) to get that price.
- Free Domain
- Unlimited Bandwith & Disk space
- 45 day money back guarantee
- 24/7 Support
- 99% Uptime guarantee
- $150 Google Ads
- $100 Bing Ads
- SEO Tools
HostGator is a pretty good host although the reviews the get lately arent the best. Their trustpilot score is an average. The upsells are pretty annoying but the overal service was excellent. Although the recent negative reviews are concerning, we will keep an eye on them.
How to choose the best shared hosting company.
When you are looking around for a new hosting company, there are several factors that you need to check before you pick one. Here below we listed the most important factors for you to check before picking a company.
Support
Support is one of the most important factors to check before choosing a hosting company. When you are having problems with your website you dont want slowly responding support. You want them to communicate quickly and take action. You should always go for a company that offers 24/7/365 day support. Check TrustPilot and other review platforms on mentionings about slow support. You can also send their sales department a pre-sale email and chekc the response time. If they respond slow when they can make a sale, you can bet your behind on it they wont reply fast to deliver support.
Speed
Speed is tremendously important for your website. Google mentioned its a ranking factor and it adds to the whole feel of your website. Research have found out that if visitors have to wait longer than 3 seconds for your website, they leave. Unfortu nately there is no way to really check this before picking a shared hosting company. Read TrustPilot and check the speed when your website is up (with the help of GMetric. Use the money back guarantee when you are not happy with the speed of your website.
Uptime
When your website is not up, potential customers can not access it. Making your website worthless. Most companies offer a uptime guarantee. Industry standard is now 99% but go for a company that offers 99.9%. With a 99.9% uptime guarantee your website can be down a maxim of almost 9 hours a year. With an 99% uptime guarantee this can be more than 3 days!!
Limitations
Some hosting companies limit the amount of domains, traffic and diskspace you can use on your account. When you are just starting with a new project, the 1 domain and limited traffic/diskspace option is probably enough, but when you grow or when you migrate your website really check this before changing. Also keep the furter growth of your website in mind.
WordPress Hosting
Do you need special hosting for your wordpress site? The answer is No. Most if not all shared hosting companies give you the ability to install wordpress on your shared hosting account and use it without any problems. Some companies limit the use of wordpress because this can be heavy on the server. Or they just try to upsell you to a more expensive account. If you are not happy with the speed of your wordpress site on hosting you can optimize it. Here you can find a tutorial for that. It works pretty good at Interserver. We can get the same speed as a dedicated VPS or even faster.
VPS Hosting
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. With VPSes a powerful dedicated server is divided into several smaller Virtual servers, so you get all the benefits of a dedicated server but with limited resources. Limited is not the best word for this because even with a 2gb server you can easily host a few bigger websites. What the downside of this is, is that you have to do the managing of the VPS yourself (or pay someone to do it). In the next few weeks we will work on the reviews of our favourite cheap VPS providers. Also the WordPress Speed tutorial will get a different section about managing your own server. For 3 bucks a month you can easily host 10 websites without sharing the recources.
Content Delivery Network
Wikipedia describes a CDN as follow: A content delivery network (CDN, also content distribution network) is a network of proxy servers that are geographically spread across the Internet in different data centers, so that users can download content quickly and without delay. This can concern texts, documents, figures, media, media streams, scripts and applications.
CloudFlare offers a FREE CDN that you can use with most shared hosting providers. This is an excellent way to save bandwidth and speed up your website. When we are ready we will list our favourite CDN providers. For now just use the FREE Cloudflare CDN.
Windows Hosting
Hosting providers let you choose which OS you can host your website on. Only pick windows hosting when its absolutely necessary. But I would stay away from this as much as possible. I would prefer to rewrite the application then to use Windows hosting. This because Windows is a lot less stable than Linux (the OS most servers use). How often do you need to reboot your desktop? You want this for your server? I dont think so. Stay away from this unless its absolutely necessary.
Summary
In this page we gave you a summary of the best shared hosting providers we have used ourself. Our best pick is Interserver cuz we love the service provided together with the monthly price (that you can actually pay monthly and not upfront). For now be cautious with HostGator. The other 4 options are excellent for an amazing price. We hope we have helped you choose a hoster and are already busy building your next project! Stay tuned for our VPS and CDN provider lists!
